Abstract
The research question addressed is, how does the systematic instruction of metacognitive reading comprehension strategies impact the reading comprehension of struggling adolescent readers? This capstone details the instruction of four key comprehension strategies identified by literacy research and assesses those strategies effectiveness in increasing reading comprehension. A concurrent triangulation mixed methods approach was used to conduct the research. The quantitative data allowed for concrete analysis of the impact on students' reading comprehension ability. The qualitative survey data provided insight into how students' monitor their own comprehension as well as what strategies they employ while reading and why they choose to use those strategies. Analyzing this data concurrently allowed for a more complete picture of the impact that the instruction of metacognitive reading comprehension strategies had on students' reading comprehension. The results revealed that students' comprehension was positively impacted and that they gained a preliminary foundational understanding of strategic reading processes.
