Abstract
The research question addressed in this curriculum capstone was: How can I create a Survey of Species book to increase my 10th grade biology students' knowledge of and interest in their surrounding flora and fauna? The rationale for this capstone was to address the lack of awareness many high school students exhibit toward their environment. Key influences for this capstone were the Understanding by Design model by Wiggins and McTighe and the Teaching for Understanding concept. As the author, I developed a unit to expose students to a variety of plants and animals they may encounter in Minnesota. This curriculum could also be used on a daily basis as a warm-up activity to provide students with a connection to their living world.
