Abstract
The research question addressed is, how do teachers change as they progress through their careers? The motivating factor for this capstone was that the author wanted to investigate his own continually changing perspectives regarding education and his career as an educator. This capstone details how teachers change as they progress through both life stages and career stages. Teachers' perceptions of their career and level of professional engagement change with time and are affected by realities experienced inside and outside of the classroom setting. The author reviews life stage and career stage models of several researchers and compares them to the results of his own teacher survey and interviews to examine differences between teachers with varying years of experience. The literature review and collected data help frame the dynamic career cycle of teachers.
