Abstract
The research question addressed in this project was what are effective research-based instructional strategies for teaching fractions, decimals, and percents to ten and eleven year olds? The motivating factor for this capstone was that students were struggling to conceptualize and understand these mathematical concepts. A key influence for this capstone was the idea that students might understand these concepts better if they were taught with real-world applications in mind. This capstone researches cognitive development of ten and eleven year olds, constructivism, math instructional strategies in general, and math instructional strategies regarding fractions, decimals, and percents. The author develops a math curriculum based on constructivist approaches that connect fractions, decimals, and percents to the real world.
