Abstract
This Capstone examined effective strategies of instruction in order create a curriculum unit on American symbols and holidays for third grade English Language Learners (ELLs). Many areas of instruction were examined in order to create the curriculum. The cognitive levels of students in grade three, differentiation in terms of Howard Gardner's Multiple Intelligences, and effective instruction for ELLs were all key research areas. The research uncovered the Sheltered Instruction Observational Protocol (SIOP) model as a mode for ELL instruction. The SIOP model was used as the lesson plan template for the curriculum. Research and planning led to a comprehensive unit on American Traditions: Symbols and Holiday which focus on the key symbols of the: Liberty Bell, Bald Eagle, American Flag, and White House. Fourth of July and Martin Luther King Jr. Day were the important holidays addressed in this unit.
