Abstract
The researched question addressed is, what are research supported strategies to effectively engage early emergent kindergarten readers? "Children enter kindergarten with widely different preparation for achieving literacy standards." (Reading & Writing grade by grade, 1999 p.49). The key influences that sparked the capstone question were: a story about a previous student, current students, literacy training, and collaboration with literacy coaches. The author looked at research supported strategies from the National Reading Panel as well as other sources and created lessons based on the researched strategies. The author focused on phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, comprehension, and oral language, in a qualitative case study. The author had great success with students being engaged and meeting the learning targets in the lessons.
