Abstract
The research question addressed in this project was, how can middle school advanced reading students use multiple lenses to deepen their critical literacy skills? It documents a novel unit in which critical literacy elements are explored through the vehicle of social justice issues. Students explored the issues of identity, culture, and multiple perspectives using journals and whole-class discussion. The author determined that: students left this unit with an increased understanding of what identity is and how it impacts how we view the world what culture is and how it impacts one's identity to feel sympathy for the downtrodden to recognize injustice and to feel anger or sadness caused by injustice and to listen and consider varying points of view. The motivating factor for this capstone was her desire to teach students that when they change their thinking to incorporate multiple perspectives, whole new worlds open up to them.
