Abstract
The research question addressed was, what role does compassion in education play in DNR/DNI directives in severely/profoundly mentally impaired students? The purpose was to investigate the prevailing legal, educational, and medical direction various school districts are taking. This study specifically looks at compassion in school district policies as they relate to the severely/profoundly mentally impaired student and DNR directives. In the course of this study, training school district staff receive and the likelihood of critical incident stress debriefing following a medical crisis are briefly noted. Data were collected through electronic retrieval of specific policies in five randomly selected school districts from a base of twelve. These policies were posted on each school district's website for public knowledge and names of school district have been omitted to maintain confidentiality. The results showed inconsistency from courts in the United States between the federal, appellate, and individual state courts. Therefore, consistency lacked in school district policies.
