Abstract
This capstone focuses on the journey of an out-lying suburb in dealing with the changing diverse population. Can cultural competency training change the dynamics that exist between the different groups of people that work and learn in a high school? The work of Gary Howard and the New Wilderness Project is highly utilized in this capstones action research. Information on the steps of how to build cultural competency within a classroom and throughout a school are defined. The capstone includes activities utilized by the researchers in conjunction with training workshops completed with Howard. Student and staff surveys were conducted on a variety of culturally competent topics to measure school progress. The school involved in this research continues to be actively involved in training staff and students on culturally competent issues.
