Abstract
The research question addressed in this project was, what are the recommended applications of reading comprehension strategies in the classroom? This study documents one teacher's application of three reading comprehension strategies in a primary classroom. It used the model of Gradual Release of Responsibility, based on Duke and Pearson's research into instructional methods of reading comprehension. The author documents the details of the lesson and uses related research literature to construct meaning and validate the study. She describes both successes and struggles in implementing the lessons and concludes that: 1) teachers need to be explicit in the instruction of reading comprehension strategies 2) teachers need to be selective in the strategies and materials selected to teach 3) teachers need to provide sufficient time for the application of strategies.
