Abstract

The research question examined in this project was, how can the author better teach writing skills to struggling writers at the high school level? The author is the teacher of an eleventh grade class intended for struggling readers and writers, and she was finding it difficult teaching her students the writing skills necessary to produce a quality essay. This project outlines a curriculum unit based on the Self-Regulated Strategy Development model developed by Harris & Graham. Within the framework of that model, the author implemented the writing strategy of PLAN and WRITE created by De La Paz, and the unit culminated in the majority of students producing a well-developed five-paragraph essay. The author documents her successes and struggles in teaching struggling writers at the high school level and outlines possible extensions for the unit.
