Abstract
The research questions addressed are: 1.) What is there about the transition to middle school that decreases students' motivation to read? 2.) What strategies can be used to most effectively motivate struggling middle school readers? 3.) Are there strategies that will facilitate both building community in the classroom and increase students' motivation to read? The motivating factor for this capstone was my own struggle to read as a middle school student and my passion for teaching struggling middle school readers. This capstone defines a struggling middle school reader, identifies middle school transition hurdles, and identifies the importance of belonging, building community, and motivating struggling middle school readers. The author selected strategies that would ensure students' sense of belonging, build community among students and teacher, and motivate the students to engage in literacy.
