Abstract
The research question addressed in this project is what are research supported strategies for creating a writing poetry curriculum for middle school students? It documents one teacher's creation of a writing poetry unit for seventh grade students and the personal and professional experiences that inspired this journey. This capstone addresses the nature of a middle school student, the student friendly classroom and the importance of writing poetry in middle school. The curriculum is based on Wiggins and McTighe's Backward curriculum design (2005), incorporating both formative and summative assessment goals. The result is a writing poetry curriculum guide that can be used by middle school teachers.
