Abstract
This capstone chronicles the implementation of student families in a K-5 public elementary school. A family unit consisted of at least one student from each grade level and a teacher or staff member. These family units met once a month to participate in a community building activity. Research for this project focused on the human need to belong, the importance of community, and the process of building a sense of community within a school. The implementation of student families offered several opportunities for students. These opportunities included a place where students could feel safe to be themselves, meeting new friends, feeling a sense of belonging, becoming acquainted with their teachers and staff members, as well as growing and learning together.
