Abstract
The research question addressed is, in what ways would family literacy activities and more frequent communication from the teacher help parents and the teacher improve children's reading skills in first grade? The motivating factor for this capstone was to improve the communication between home and school in regards to children's literacy. This capstone details how first graders and their parents use family literacy activities and a home reading journal to help create a strong connection between the home and school. Key influence for this capstone was a parent who inspired the writer to create a better form of communication between the school and home. The author develops a home reading journal that is used as a communication piece between the teacher and parents to improve reading skills using a form of family literacy activity at home.
