Abstract
This capstone project takes the reader on a journey of understanding learning disabilities in basic reading skills. It includes current research in early intervention, hereditary factors, brain imaging, environmental issues, phonological processing, orthographic processing, and specific reading strategies and programs that have shown to work with struggling readers and students with reading disabilities. The research question addressed in this project was, could a reading decoding program called Phono-Graphix(TM) or Reading Reflex increase decoding skills for three students with reading disabilities? A six week study is included in this research project with three elementary students with learning disabilities in reading. This case study includes the success of the implementation of this reading program along with guided reading books. The students were able to increase their reading decoding skills and confidence in reading.
