Abstract
This capstone examined what the necessary elements were to create an effective literacy portfolio for kindergarten students including state standards and district outcomes. The literacy portfolio was broken down into five elements phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency. In addition to the five essential elements I added a section on writing. This capstone details each element and why it is necessary to be included within the portfolio. There is also mention to the typical five year old development and its relationship to literacy. Specific ways to incorporate each element into the classroom are included with resources available in the appendices to provide educators the opportunity to develop a literacy portfolio manageable for their own kindergarten classrooms. Additional classroom opportunities to increase parent involvement and literacy skills within the classroom and home are also addressed.
