Abstract
The research question addressed in this project is, how can the implementation of SmartMusic technology in the middle school orchestra impact the motivation and skill development of the string learner? This capstone researches different types of motivation including hope, success, community and technology and how these types of incentives influence student learning in the classroom. Key influences include Alfie Kohn, an expert in the field of motivational strategies in education, and Marc Prensky, an authority on modern technology. Five students were observed as they used SmartMusic technology during orchestra rehearsals and individual lessons. The students also participated in a survey at the end of the three weeks of research. The study found that using SmartMusic was a motivating factor for the students and they felt they improved on their instruments because they used the SmartMusic program.
