Abstract
The research question addressed is, how can the challenging subject of writing be taught in a way that appeals to both teachers and students? It documents one high school English teacher's search for significant principles both of writing and of brain-based teaching that can guide the teaching of writing. Key influences included professors, colleagues, and students. Key sources from research included Caine & Caine, Elbow, Cronin, Sinatra & Barkley, and the 6 + 1 traits of writing. The result of the study was a collection of teaching units and strategies to motivate and guide students through the writing process, such as a revision unit, a listing of informal writing strategies, 6 + 1 trait writing rubrics, and student worksheets.
