Abstract
The research question addressed is: how much has literacy in kindergarten changed throughout the years? The motivating factor for this capstone was the author's struggle with creating a literacy-rich kindergarten classroom that was developmentally appropriate for her students. The capstone documents the history of kindergarten, current trends in kindergarten literacy, pros of the literacy push, and finally cons of the literacy push. Key influences for this capstone include Fountas and Pinnell, Tompkins, Fischer, Wilford, and Jacobson. The author created an informational brochure and presentation detailing what literacy components will be taught in kindergarten, as well as enrichment activities and extensions to use at home. The author's intentions with creating the brochure and presentation were to better prepare kindergarten students and their parents for the literacy demands in today's kindergarten classrooms.
