Abstract
This capstone gives a closer look into the different types of writing portfolios used at the primary level. It looks at the stages of writing that are relevant for first graders and begins to develop an appropriate plan to make the portfolio entries useful. The motivation was an existing writing portfolio that was mandated by the school district. The question was how to utilize the entries. Clay's expertise on the primary writing stages and Jenkins definitions on three different portfolios comprises the basis for much research in this capstone. This capstone works the entries into the writing curriculum and also informally assesses the students' writing knowledge to make the portfolio entries practical, functional, and valuable.
