Abstract
My paper resulted from the challenges of reaching both the high achieving students while helping the struggling readers. Guided reading is one instructional strategy that can be used to reach all students, which promotes learning in the balanced literacy framework. My review of literature provides evidence that guided reading addressed the needs of individual students by providing opportunities to work in small groups. My literature review also established that running records were an important component of guided reading. My study consisted of four students in the first grade. Guided reading strategies were implemented into guided reading time. Student progress was observed through the use of running records. The results indicated that guided reading was an effective strategy for my students. The four students I observed made one year's growth in reading. I learned how a guided reading program can facilitate a student's independence in becoming an active learner.
