Abstract
In response to recent changes in kindergarten curriculum and structure, along with the relatively new field of study investigating the transition to kindergarten, this paper seeks to answer the question, what issues need to be addressed with parents prior to kindergarten to facilitate a smooth transition? This paper contains an exhaustive summary of current research, including work by Robert Pianta, Sue Dockett, Sara Rimm-Kaufman, and many others. A written questionnaire was produced to survey parents concerning their child's transition into kindergarten, what issues they wanted more information on prior to kindergarten, and a rating of current and potential kindergarten transition programs. The survey results suggest that parents want more information on a typical day of kindergarten, information on specific skills their child will learn, and more. The capstone concludes with a call to action based on the results of the literature review and the survey.
