Abstract

This capstone is a training manual designed to train bilingual paraprofessionals, so that they, in turn, can train the parents of elementary-age English Language Learners to work with the school, as well as with their children at home. Although the direct target of the training are the bilingual paraprofessionals who work in schools with ELL students, the ultimate goal of the manual is to empower these parents to work more effectively with their children by continuing the development and maintenance of the home language, including native literacy skills. In this manner, these parents help create a bilingual educational environment for their children. They become the school's partners by providing important native language support for their children while the school provides the English portion of an academic bilingual environment. This is particularly critical in schools without adequate bilingual programs.
