Abstract
The motivation for this research project and the following paper came from wanting to help my students succeed. I have a few students each year who are unmotivated to learn. I wanted to see how building a learning community could help motivate my low-achieving students. I researched low-achieving students, motivation, and building a learning community. Most of the research agreed upon the need to develop a strong classroom environment. The research also stated that building a learning community would have a positive impact on students' motivation. For my study I built a learning community with a group of my low-achieving students. I tried various strategies promoting team building, listening, and dialogue between teacher and student. My results showed that building a learning community helped to get to know my students better. I feel I created a safe environment that promoted learning and helped to motivate my students.
