Abstract
This capstone is a curriculum development project in designing a text set for high school English Learner (EL) students. This capstone reflects the research surrounding banned/challenged texts, literacy best practice, and fostering a connection between students’ lives and classroom text. A definition of text sets and their use, as well as an overview of criteria for development is included. Chapter four contains a text set of banned/challenged books that align thematically with the required novels in a Language Arts 9 and Language Arts 10 curriculum. Included in each title in the text set is a summary of the text, as well as its history as a banned/challenged novel and its controversial material. Common Core standards are identified for each title and its use in the classroom.
