Abstract
Grace Foster is almost 16 and the daughter of a Lutheran pastor. It is 1989 in New York City, and the plague of AIDS is wreaking havoc in her community. At the same time, she is falling in love. She wonders how her dad deals with the petty and impossible people of the congregation, but when she sees their prejudice and hypocrisy, it ignites her anger. She learns that the world is a dangerous place for those who are different. She wonders if it is safe for her to follow where she thinks her own heart is leading. When she encounters the sickness and death that is all around her, she has compassion. But can she have faith? She learns firsthand how violent the world can be. How can she find her voice and work for justice? How will she foster grace and speak the words of love in a hostile world?
