Abstract
The research question addressed in this project was, how can integrating movement with vocabulary instruction improve reading comprehension in first grade students? The motivating factors for this capstone were the author's personal passion for dance and creative movement, as well as the observations made within her classroom of the tremendous amount of physical energy that most students possess. The integration of movement with vocabulary instruction is the main focus of the capstone and is considered a strategy for improving students' reading comprehension. The author summarizes literature that focuses on movement, vocabulary instruction and the integration of movement with vocabulary instruction. The literature review leads to a supplementary movement-based curriculum that can be used with selected stories from Houghton Mifflin's first grade reading curriculum.
