Abstract
The research question addressed in this study is how can one teacher's journey motivate reading resistant boys in a high school setting to read? As a high school reading teacher, I became concerned observing my boy students' resistance towards reading. It was not long before they refused to read. I wanted to discover how to best support and motivate them to read. In this qualitative study, I interviewed three reading teachers and three high school boys, as well as kept a self-reflective journal on my observations. My results aligned with current research on motivating boys to read. I found that boys prefer to have choice and control over what they read. In addition to this, boys also favor reading books that have a central male character. Finally, boys choose to read books that match their interests.
