Abstract
This capstone is a case study involving ESL professors, ESL teachers and mainstream teachers. Each participant was given the same text, content objective and description of students and asked to create a language objective. The purpose of the study was to investigate what language objective would be identified, how teachers identify a language objective, what factors guide a teacher in deciding on a specific language objective and finally, what I could learn through doing this study. Each participant created a different language objective. The language objectives produced were analyzed using a research-based academic language checklist. The results showed a relationship between background knowledge of academic language and strength of the language objective that was produced.
