Abstract

The research question addressed in this project was, how can Jan Richardson's guided reading curriculum be adapted for emergent and early readers in our kindergarten and first grade classrooms? After review of current research and reflection on our own experiences, we adapted Richardson's (2009) framework, based on our current understanding of effective instructional practices in early literacy. The purpose of this capstone was to adapt a framework and modify tools for conducting effective guided reading lessons that specifically addressed the unique needs of our learners. This capstone was a curriculum design only project and is designed for use in balanced literacy programs in kindergarten and first grade.
