Course Description
Goals: To acquaint students with the broad spectrum of musical systems and structures across the Middle East region, while simultaneously learning about social life and cultural production. Content: In the Middle East music has always been, and continues to be, a vital form of cultural expression. Through readings, audio, media and hands-on experiences this course examines how the sounds and structure of music and musical performance inform our interpretations of the complexities of social and cultural life across the broader Middle East. (NEW LANGUAGE) Recommended: knowledge of music fundamentals, MUS 1020 or equivalent experience.
