Course Description

Goals: To introduce the approaches and perspectives of the anthropological study of human beings. To survey the ways human cultures shape and are shaped by historical, environmental, biological and social forces. To introduce the importance of context in social research. Content: Introduces key concepts, basic content, approaches and key questions of sociocultural anthropology, archaeology, biological anthropology and linguistic anthropology. Provide students with a working knowledge of categories of key anthropological vocabulary, research orientations and practices. Consistent with the anthropology department's commitment to high impact, experiential learning, this class includes regular field exercises requiring students to apply class content outside of the classroom. Taught: Annually, both semesters. Credits: 4 credits
