Abstract
This is a juvenile historical novel about a recently arrived Finnish immigrant in Minnesota around the turn of the 20th century. Part of the story is the changing environment as lumberjacks, farmers, and miners worked the land with their “muscle, sweat and blood" and tried to survive. The author's historical research brings to life gritty characters in lumber camps and alludes to the impact wrought by laborers and settlers.
