Abstract

The research question addressed in this project was, how do we modify science curriculum so that it meets the needs of 5th grade English learners of varying proficiency levels? This capstone details the need for modifying curriculum in the content areas so that they can be accessed by English learners at all proficiency levels. It draws heavily from the curriculum model Understanding by Design and discusses the importance of academic standards based teaching. This curriculum revision includes supports for English learners of all levels, as recommended by the WIDA consortium.
