Developing a system for planning units to support inquiry-based elementary science curricula
The research question for this project is: How can a system of planning units be developed to support an inquiry-based elementary science curriculum? The purpose of this project was to determine a system that can be an effective tool for planning inquiry-based elementary science units. The methodology I used to answer this question was planning and reflecting upon a third grade Structures and Functions science unit. My planning format is a template from Understanding by Design (Wiggins & McTighe, 2005) adapted by incorporating inquiry-based learning models (Eisenkraft, 2003 Huber & Moore, 2001). I share my reflections by including journal entries in correlation with the stages of the planning template, in addition to the reflections, considerations, and implications shared in the conclusion of the project.
