Comprehensive sex education: is it being taught in a school district where it is mandated by policy and educational standards?
The research question addressed in this project was, is a large metropolitan school district with an implemented state policy and school district educational standards, teaching comprehensive sex education to grades ninth through twelfth? Comprehensive sex education is accurate, factual and developmentally appropriate information and training on human sexuality topics. Health teachers were contacted and asked to discuss the topics they teach in their health classrooms. Also contacted were a pro-choice and a pro-life representative that are also within the school district's boundaries, to discuss the current educational standards, state policy and results of the survey. The survey results were that the educators were not teaching comprehensive sex education but, they were teaching with in the standards. The representatives were both not surprised by the results and they both wanted some of the same topics taught to students.
