Abstract

This capstone explores the leisure reading of adolescents in an 8th grade urban, charter school setting. Twenty-one participants were given a reading questionnaire based off of the Adolescent Motivation to Read Profile (AMRP) (Pitcher, et.al, 2007). From the questionnaire six students were chosen to be interviewed, two very good readers, two good readers, and two okay readers. The data was examined and it was found that students had an outstanding self-perception of their reading abilities. Students who leisure read were more likely to be at grade level for reading comprehension. This capstone then explores different strategies to help teachers and administration to increase leisure reading.
