Abstract
This capstone focuses on the role teachers and schools play in character development. Community building is instrumental in developing a safe learning environment where students can learn and grow. A safe learning environment promotes positive language, behaviors, and accountability. Within this capstone the influence of negative language is discussed along with ideas for implementing a safe learning environment. As part of the research, a survey was given to 20 current teachers. These participants answered questions regarding words or phrases they do not allow in their classroom, and a variety of questions on how they hold students accountable for behavior.
