Abstract

The research question addressed is, how do inner city charter high school personnel describe effective attendance policies for at-risk students? The motivating factor for this capstone was the struggle involving at-risk students attending school on a regular basis. This capstone details the positive and negative aspects of inner city charter high school attendance and how it effects achievement in the classroom. Low attendance is a prolific problem in the inner city and ought to be examined more closely by educators and scholars alike. The author develops a series of interview questions that point to the core issues surrounding attendance. Based upon the various themes that emerge in the interviews, the author is able to identify key aspects contributing to low attendance as well as explore options for improvement.
