Abstract
My experience as a coach and teacher led me to question the relationship between academic success and athletic participation. I believe in the positive effects of participating in sports. What I really wanted to know was does it matter what sport a student participates in? This capstone investigates this question by means of a quantitative study at a large urban high school. The study found evidence that academic success, measured in GPA and attendance rates, varies greatly between different sports. Similar studies, done by other researchers, are reviewed. An analysis of the results of the study is discussed. Recommendations for possible future studies of the same type are explored.
