Abstract

The research question addressed in this project was, how do specific strategies designed to build and strengthen the teacher-student relationship impact students in the Kindergarten immersion classroom during the early months of the school year? The motivation behind this capstone was one Kindergarten immersion teacher's challenge with the language barrier that exists at the beginning of the school year when nearly all students arrive with no knowledge of the target language. Through action research in her classroom, the author explores four teaching strategies designed to foster strong teacher-student relationships in conjunction with the students' experience with the new language. She concludes that the four strategies documented in this study were effective in strengthening teacher-student relationships, and shares detailed narrative accounts of the implementation of each strategy.
