Abstract

My research was motivated by a strong desire to help the English Language Learners (ELLs) at my school succeed. In my study, I sought ways for mainstream teachers to meet the academic needs of English Language Learners. I wanted to compile some data on the needs of ELLs and effective teaching techniques to meet these needs. I collected data by surveying mainstream teachers and interviewing ESL and mainstream teachers. The results of this study show that ELLs do have needs that go beyond those of their native English speaking peers. However, the study also shows that the teachers of my school have several techniques which they feel support these students. These techniques work in my school and are supported by literature in the field of English as a Second Language.
