Abstract

This capstone examines the use of formative assessment in literacy instruction with first grade students. The literature review defines formative assessment as well compares formative assessment to summative assessment. The role of questioning in checking for understanding was also discussed in the literature review. Three questions guided the action research for this project. Where are my students in their reading instruction? Where do I want my students to end up? What will I do to make sure that my students get to that goal? Using informal reading inventories, running records, problems solving charts and writing activities students made significant gains in their reading instruction.
