Abstract
This study investigated the effectiveness of Reading Recovery strategies in improving the academic language proficiency of young English language learners (ELLs). Research on Reading Recovery was highlighted along with a review of how ELLs acquire reading skills. Eleven kindergarten ELLs from varying language backgrounds participated in small guided reading groups which incorporated Reading Recovery strategies into the lessons. Pre- and post-tests were used to measure growth in literacy skills. The ELLs exhibited growth in a variety early literacy skills. This study supported the use of Reading Recovery strategies combined with small group instruction to narrow the achievement gap between ELL and native speaking kindergartners.
