Abstract

This capstone addresses, the question: How can secondary social studies teachers use contemporary music as primary sources to help the student as a whole, academically, socially and emotionally? The motivating factor for this capstone was the desire to integrate contemporary music into the classroom while encouraging more participation and interest as well as catering to a variety of learning styles with the task of analyzing primary sources. This capstone details how social studies teachers can add music into different units using historical context and background of a song. The author developed five detailed lesson plans with a variety of uses and topics for the middle school social studies classroom.
