Abstract

This capstone provides research from professionals in the field about improving reading comprehension and motivation for middle school students. The research shows how middle school students think and learn, and why it is important for students to become life-long readers. It also describes the reading workshop model and all the necessary components of it. This capstone explains reading comprehension strategies such as the seven most common strategies used in schools today, as well as techniques to improve middle school student's motivation to read. A reading survey and interview were conducted at a middle school and the results are included. To culminate all the research and suggestions from teachers a resource manual was created.
