Abstract
The research questions addressed are: How can educators motivate children to enjoy reading, even though it is not their preferred activity? How can alternative types of print (beyond fiction books) help students become motivated to read for pleasure? Research stemmed from interest in finding strategies to engage students in reading. Experts in the field helped to frame ways to inspire students to love reading so it becomes a tool for lifelong learning. This Capstone includes four categories: affective aspects of reading, student interests, motivation, and parent/teacher strategies. The product includes many resources and the development of a Family Literacy Night to help bridge the work of parents and teachers to support students in reading. The Family Literacy Night outlines four learning stations for parents and children: Flashlight Fun Reading (creative ways to read), Online Reading Games, Make and Take Games for Home, and Coaching Reading.
