Abstract

The research question addressed in this study was, what is the sense of belonging, hope, and goal orientation in graduates of project-based learning environments? With a personal background in interdisciplinary project-based charter schools, I was motivated to see if there is a long-term effect of these environments on their graduates. Through the key influences of Van Ryzin, Newell, Snyder, and Eccles, I researched stage-environmental fit theory and the Hope Study to better understand my action research. My research study involved 1995-2004 graduates of five different Minnesota charter schools that used project-based learning. Each graduate completed two surveys including the Trait Hope Survey. The results were inconclusive in terms of belonging, but showed these graduates had extremely high levels of both hope and goal orientation despite being displaced from a project-based learning environment for at least four years.
