Abstract

The research question addressed in this project was - how do middle school students define effective teachers. The project looks at effective teachers as defined by policymakers, researchers (including Danielson and Stronge's frameworks for evaluating teachers) and students. It delves into the dichotomy of defining teaching by student performance or by defining teaching as a craft. The action research involves the author's seventh grade homeroom students using drawing and interviews as the research methodology. The author reaffirmed the belief a student needs to feel cared for within the school environment.
